Management of workout loans varies greatly depending on the policies and financial health of the bank. These hard-to-collect loans are frequently handed over to a specialized department in the bank that attempts to collect as efficiently as possible. A strong bank can afford to take a longer time to collect, but when a bank is experiencing financial problems itself it is likely to be under government pressure to liquidate loans quickly.
