The skills gap: U.S. work-force woes complicate business-location equation
Article Abstract:
A widening gap between corporate needs and US workforce skills is affecting numerous business facilities, particularly manufacturing. The recruitment of qualified workers had become so difficult to attain that some companies resort to relocation. One reason cited for this development is the higher corporate demands on workers spawned by the widespread practice of total quality management in US firms. This skills gap is also attributed to the lower quality of graduates turned out by educational institutions as well as the changing composition of the US workforce.

The expansion axman cometh: U.S. states save, spend, slash taxes
Article Abstract:
An interesting trend in the analysis of Site Selection's 33rd edition of the '50 Legislative Climates' publication is that an increasing number of state governments are leveraging their tax revenues to fund industrial development programs that attract business relocations. The bullish US economy has encouraged many states to invest their budget surplus into social and infrastructure projects and additionally decrease tax rates in many business-sensitive areas. States slashed taxes amounting to $3.8 bil in 1998, compared to only $2.6 bil in 1997.
