The wireless office moves closer
Article Abstract:
The development of wireless technology has great implications for office developers and could make office construction both cheaper and simpler. Already there is growing use of wireless local area networks and cordless pbx switchboards, while 1996 has seen the launch of dual mode phones: these function as a cordless extension within the office and a cellphone outside. Such developments will bring more flexibility to office design, and mean that some buildings now regarded as obsolete may be useful again. It may also lead to short leases becoming more attractive.

No longer a blot but a beauty spot
Article Abstract:
The UK distribution property sector has grown rapidly in a short time, but some authorities remain hostile or ignorant about distribution buildings, particularly when they are part of mixed-use sites. Because distribution buildings tend to need large flat sites and require good road and rail links and all-year-round access, this usually means a greenfield site. This in turn often has environmental implications. In mixed-use developments, there are often concerns over visual intrusion: high-bay warehouses can be 5-6 mt higher than nearby buildings.

Pretty tight
Article Abstract:
The market town of Cirencester, England, has developed a good employment base, but planning restrictions on development size have led to a number of companies deciding in 2000 to leave to develop elsewhere. The local council does not want to harm the town's image, but is not too worried.
