Article Abstract:
North West, England, is a very popular area for pharmaceutical and automobile industries, with 25% of UK aerospace companies located in Lancashire. Manchester is an important office location, with prime area rental values reaching 250 pounds sterling per sq ft. Unemployment, in Greater Manchester, fell to 5.1%, in Nov 1997. Around 11% of the total UK workforce is employed in manufacturing industries, in the North West. Liverpool port has undergone redevelopment to become an active container port and the Albert Docks have become a tourist attraction.

South East
Article Abstract:
South East England has an unemployment level of 5.1% compared to the average of 7.4%, for the rest of the UK. The GDP for Oxfordshire is 15% above the average for the UK whilst in Berkshire it is over 30% higher. Some renovation of old industrial areas around Dover, Sheerness and Thanet has gone ahead following grant of 14.6 million pounds sterling. Hampshire is becoming more popular with new businesses due to the ease of access to all parts of the South East. The route of the high speed train link with the Channel Tunnel has yet to be finalised.

Article Abstract:
South West England has lower rates of pay than the UK norm but also has a lower level of unemployment, at 4.7% in Apr 1997, compared to the average of 5.9% for the rest of the UK. The South West is an important area for the tourist trade which is valued at around 2.4 billion pounds annually. The former naval base at Portland is being redeveloped into a commercial cross-Channel port. Some 400 million pounds sterling is being spent on an urban renewal program for Bristol.
