Approaches to the sponsorship of fashion design are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Fashion designers need extensive backing to put on catwalk presentations, and for this reason are entering into a range of agreements with sponsors. Julien Macdonald, for example, art-directed the spring 1999 colours campaign for make-up manufacturer Max Factor, and also also designed a dress with references to the bottle used by Tanqueray gin, another sponsor.

Diamonds are inherently extremely beautiful, according to couturier Roland Mouret, who is to manage the design of a diamond jewellery collection to be shown for the first time in Sep 2001, along with his clothing designs. He indicates that his latest collection has been inspired by Hollywood in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.
