A Tory backbencher offers his leader a ladder to climb down
Article Abstract:
Conservative MP Andrew Tyrie, a former economist, is not necessarily in favour of European monetary union (EMU). However, he has the sense to see that the Conservative party should not rule out EMU in advance, recognizing that EMU could actually bring benefits for the UK's prosperity and for its international influence. The Conservative party should consider being more positive about EMU, as it would be very embarrassing for the party to have to reverse its policy if EMU does turn out to be a success.
