A case for social services, not social workers
Article Abstract:
Westminister City Council in London, UK has decided to contract out its social services division to intergrate health and social services, avoiding duplication and mismanagement. It is believed that this will improve accountability to the client-base. Westminister has a budget of 365 million; about 50% is contracted out. About 2,500 redundancies have been made leaving a workforce of 7,000, saving 9 million pounds sterling annually. The role of the social worker has been divided into purchaser/provider functions. Workers work within a team.

Fighting for foreign friends

Financial incentives generally play only a small part in attracting foreign companies to the UK. They place greater emphasis on the overall package being offered by a particular region, taking into account factors such as land availability, training resources and transportation links. Receiving a warm welcome from the local authority and the local community can also be a significant factor in a foreign company's decision to invest in a particular location.

High cost of digging for victory
Article Abstract:
Many of the quarries currently being worked in the UK were approved in the period 1943-1948 under Interim Development Orders (IDOs). Many IDOs give only vague details about site boundaries, and do not specify working hours or land reinstatement procedures. They are resulting in extensive damage to the countryside, and cannot be lifted by local authorities unless compensation is paid.
