A case of merger in the first degree
Article Abstract:
There is a strong trend towards merger among UK law firms, even among extremely well established firms with a very well-known name. Most recently, Frere Cholmeley Bischoff, which was founded in 1750, has announced plans to merge with national concern Eversheds in Aug 1998. This will create the largest law firm in the UK, with 988 fee earners and 322 partners. Eversheds Executive Chmn Keith James emphasizes that merger should not be regarded as an end in itself, and should only be contemplated if it really is the best way forward.

The Americans have landed, and they're here to stay
Article Abstract:
There are now almost 70 US law firms with offices in London, England, with around 375 UK lawyers working for them. US law firms tend to offer higher salaries than their UK counterparts, but UK lawyers may encounter difficulties if they move to a US firm simply for financial reasons. US firms have a strong entrepreneurial spirit, while UK firms rely more heavily on employee commitment. However, the differences between them can be overcome.
