Ghostbusters
Article Abstract:
Using child actors can be a very enlightening experience, according to director Deborah Warner. She has been working with two child actors for the staging of Benjamin Britten's opera 'The Turn of the Screw,' and has found that the children have significantly influenced her investigation of the work. She is very keen to speak out against those who interpret the work too unambiguously. She feels that it contains many ambiguities, and that to answer them is to actually avoid its real meaning.

Spoiling for a good fight at the opera
Article Abstract:
Nature is very uninteresting as a theatrical image, according to opera director David Alden. He regards his staging of Monteverdi's 'The Coronation of Poppea' for the Welsh National Opera at the New Theatre in Cardiff, Wales, as an abstract visual event. He never puts nature in his productions, preferring imagery of nature instead. He believes that his style is still developing, although all his productions are basically extremely intense.

The man who invented the opera nasty
Article Abstract:
Opera director David Alden has become renowned for his extremely unusual approach. He developed a very confrontational, physical and deconstructivist style in the 1980s, working in particular with designer David Fielding. The two men allowed instinct to rule, but did not necessarily want to be shocking or radical. Alden always begins by carefully assimilating the music, and then builds up a personal response to it.
