A case of vowel play

Article Abstract:

Barrie Rutter was inspired by touring with Tony Harrison who prefers acting using his own northern voice to form the Northern Broadsides company to produce classical plays with northern accents. 'Richard III' is set on the Yorkshire/Lancashire border where the company rehearses and most of the actor s come from Yorkshire. Rutter thinks that northern voices with their short vowels and heavy consonants affect the rhythm of the verse, drawing attention to it. Rutter also avoids the restrictions of theatre buildings and performs in the Marina Boatshed, Hull and Middleham Castle.

Article Abstract:

David Hirson's first play of an unusual comedy set in the seventeenth century won awards and nominations on Broadway, and opened in London on Feb 05 1992. Backed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the play is in rhyming couplets apparently in the seventeenth century and concentrates on a squabble between a court dramatist and a troubadour. On Broadway it won two awards and was nominated for five awards, but closed for commercial reasons. It opened in London at the Lyric, Hammersmith in Feb 1992.
