A cautionary tale from down under
Article Abstract:
New Zealand free market reforms have been seen as successful by a number of visitors, but close study shows some drawbacks. Crime has increased, there is concern over emigration of young New Zealanders, exports have flattened, the economy is not growing, and social issues such as jobs are a concern everywhere. The reforms were imposed from above by a Labor government during the 1980s when free market policies were seen as the norm in the US and United Kingdom. Voters discovered they were given a radical right government whichever party they voted for, and they have become disillusioned with government.

Germany's European strait-jacket
Article Abstract:
Germany currently faces serious economic, social and political challenges. The government is under strong pressure from trade unions, for example, while unemployment is very high and the governing coalition can take no action without the support of the opposition, which controls the upper chamber of parliament. Germany remains strongly committed to European integration, but this may in fact be hampering efforts to adapt and reform and may be preventing the country from asserting its legitimate self-interest.

Made in Germany
Article Abstract:
The strong anti-German sentiment which is currently being expressed in the UK overlooks the fact that the two countries in fact have a shared heritage and much in common. The British royal family has German origins, for example, while large areas of the two countries' intellectual and cultural life are shared. Other areas of common origins include language, music and politics.
