A cool breeze blowing Bill's way
Article Abstract:
US President Bill Clinton has managed to retain his popularity among ordinary Americans, despite allegations by Paula Jones that he made sexual advances to her. The majority of people surveyed by USA Today believed that an incident probably did occur between Clinton and Jones, but this has not led to him being shunned. His continued popularity is probably attributable to the fact that he has never attempted to deny that he may not have been completely faithful to his wife. He has spoken openly of difficulties in his marriage, and this has meant that he cannot be accused of hypocrisy.

Clinton handed reprieve by voters
Article Abstract:
The results of the Nov 1998 mid-term elections can be regarded as a strong endorsement of President Bill Clinton by ordinary voters, who seem willing to overlook scandal relating to his private life. If the Democrats had performed badly in these elections, then the future of Clinton's presidency would have been in doubt. It now seems much less likely that he will be removed from office by resignation or impeachment. Republicans still hold the majority in the House of Representatives, but they are aware that they cannot afford to ignore the views of ordinary Americans.

Clinton's ratings rise as Baghdad smoulders and Washington ignites
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton continues to remain out of the limelight, even though opinion polls indicate that his popularity among ordinary Americans is rising. He has stated that he has no intention of resigning, but it is also reported that he has expressed regret in private for the difficulties created by his behaviour for Democrats in Congress. Republicans seem to be becoming more willing to compromise, with a Senate trial now not likely to last as long as had been initially anticipated.
