A craftsman returns to his manor
Article Abstract:
The Geffrye Museum in London, England, is staging the first exhibition in London devoted to the work of the Guild of Handicraft, established in 1888 by architect Charles Robert Ashbee. The Guild initially had only four craftsmen, but at its peak had 40, mostly local men from the East End of London. Ashbee's designs bear the hallmarks of the refined last days of the Gothic Revival and the beginnings of art nouveau. The Guild's metalwork is particularly well-known and collected today.
