A crisis in our universities
Article Abstract:
Standards of teaching and research at UK universities are falling behind those of their counterparts in the US. This can be attributed to insufficient funding, with many talented academics moving to jobs outside the academic sphere in order to boost their income. All undergraduates must now pay tuition fees, but this does not guarantee that they will be taught well. It is right to encourage breadth in higher education, but it is wrong to try to compare completely different institutions and subjects.
