A directors' game of Russian roulette
Article Abstract:
A discussion paper on 'Internal financial control effectiveness' to be published soon by the Auditing Practices Board wil show that there are still many problems relating to internal control reporting. The first recommendation of the Cadbury Report of Dec 1992, that a set of criteria be established for assessing the effectiveness of the internal control of auditing, has been met, but there are still problems with too many different bodies being involved, and there is a clear need for stronger leadership on corporate governance issues.

Labour continues Russian roulette on Europe
Article Abstract:
Whether the Maastricht treaty will or will not be verified by the UK is largely in the hands of the Labour Party and the rebels in the Conservative Party. When the referendum was held in 1975 to decide on application for membership of the Common Market the British people voted two to one in favour. At that time the Labour Party was against joining, rallying behind the flag of national sovereignty. If Labour rebels had not voted with the government, Edward Heath's plans to take the UK into the market would have failed.

Politics of presure that took root in May 1968
Article Abstract:
In 1968 young American men burnt their draft cards and girls protested against war. In Paris and Prague affluent students rioted. Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated and US troops massacred about 500 people in My Lai. The long-term results of this insurrection are high-profile campaigns including feminism, nuclear disarmament, gay rights and environmental issues. Pressure groups of citizens have more political initiative.
