A fair game for shoppers
Article Abstract:
Improved marketing has led to a significant rise in consumer awareness about ethical trading issues in the UK. Ethical sourcing has been promoted in particular by the Fairtrade Foundation, established in 1992 by several church-backed development agencies and Third World pressure groups. The foundation's Fairtrade Mark indicates goods produced by workers who have guaranteed minimum wages and which meet certain environmental conditions. Ethical trading is set to become an increasingly significant issue, with almost 70% of Britons claiming that they would pay more for fairly traded products.

All the fear of the fair
Article Abstract:
There were 105 accidents at travelling funfairs in the UK in 1994, and three people killed. However, the Health and Safety Executive points out that the accident rate is very low compared with the number of rides operated, and all rides are regularly inspected. Some organisations involved with safety and consumer protection are still expressing concern, especially about inadequate staff training and the fact that no fairground owner has ever been charged with manslaughter following a death.

Let's make it fair
Article Abstract:
Some higher education experts are beginning to express doubts about the reliability of traditional written exams in assessing a student's abilities. They point to inconsistencies between subjects, problems with inter-tutor reliability and lack of accuracy by lecturers in assessing students' work. Some establishments are now considering alternative ways of assessing students, such as in-tray exercises, case-studies, takeaway papers and open-book exams.
