A famous Theme Age monument
Article Abstract:
The National Trust and English Heritage plan a new visitors' centre for Stonehenge, the sandstone structure eight miles north of Salisbury, to improve its air of mystery while still providing tourist facilities for the 990 visitors an hour in the peak season. Salisbury District Council rejected plans in Dec 1991 and an appeal has been submitted to Michael Howard, Secretary of State for the Environment. An open competition has been launched to find a sensitive architect for the Unesco World Heritage Site.

Free spirit
Article Abstract:
It is vital that art is made accessible for ordinary people, according to Julia Peyton-Jones, director of the Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park, London, England. The gallery attracted 368,000 visitors in 1995, and has greatly benefited from showing sometimes very controversial works. It is now closed until Sep 1997 for a revamp which will give new space for showing art and for offices. Entrance will still be free after the ravamp, a point which Peyton-Jones believes is extremely important.

All it's cranked up to be
Article Abstract:
The Science Museum in London, England, has always been a fascinating place for children to visit. However, it seems increasingly over recent years to have focused on the past, rather than the present or the future. Its exhibits are old fashioned, and no longer represent the latest in scientific and technological developments. This is set to change as 45.5 million pounds sterling is invested in the new Wellcome Wing, which will focus on contemporary science, medicine and technology.
