A cult above the rest
Article Abstract:
Julius J Epstein, 83, and his twin brother Philip G, were contract writers for Warners, and wrote the Oscar-winning 'Casablanca.' He was nominated for an Oscar for 'Reuben Reuben', 'Four Daughters' and 'Pete 'n' Tillie.' He prefers to write alone since his brother died aged 43. He sees new releases regularly and is still working, with a TV script about baseball and an idea for a film based on Laurie Colwin's 'Happy All the Time.' He has a pacemaker but was a boxer and ran five miles a day until 1983.

The complacent cowboy
Article Abstract:
Most film critics have a very high opinion of director John Ford, and praise the directness and pictorial beauty of his work. However, a few people find that his westerns do not arouse any particularly positive feelings, especially those who became involved in the industry after the era in which westerns were most popular. Some object to his paternalistic idealism and to the way in which women are relegated to minor roles, as well as to his negative portayals of Indians.

Mr Roberts goes to Washington
Article Abstract:
Tim Robbins wrote the satirical film 'Bob Roberts' about a folk-singer who became a senatorial candidate. Robbins also acted the lead part and directed the film. Publicity interviews expect him to give political opinions because of the film's story-line. The film is a tribute to BBC documentaries. It does not attempt to persuade the viewer which party to vote for, but does encourage voting.
