A foul vinegar brews in the hills
Article Abstract:
English Nature, the Countryside Council for Wales and Scottish National Heritage have produced a report demonstrating acidification damage to over 430,000 hectares of land known as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The worst affected area is north Wales where acid rain is responsible for the loss of plants, animals and fish. The Department of the Environment Critical Loads Advisory Group produces maps of soil critical loads showing over 180,000 sq km of land exceeding their critical load. The EC large combustion plants directive requires a 60% reduction in sulphur dioxide emissions by 2003.

Rosemary, the red-nosed reindeer?
Article Abstract:
Certain animals and plants have come to be associated with Christmas, but in many cases they actually have very tenuous links with Christmas on closer investigation. The robin, for example, often appears on Christmas cards, but is in fact less likely to survive a cold winter than other birds. Fir trees are now widely sold at Christmas, but were in fact introduced to the UK only relatively recently. They are grown commercially just for Christmas, and bear little resemblance to real Norway spruces.

Fact: the woods are not dying
Article Abstract:
Scientists are beginning to accept that the link between air pollution and the poor health of trees may not be as clear as has previously been believed. This is the case even in parts of central Europe where many trees have perished. In fact, forest trees in central Europe are now enjoying greater growth raters than at any time since records began, and scientists do not really know why this should be the case.
