Do we need Robin Cook?
Article Abstract:
Robin Cook is the highly respected UK Labour Party spokesman on foreign affairs. People praise his ability to speak well and his intellectual qualities, though he appears overly proud of his own speeches and does not appear to understand his own subject matter, but waffles. Cook received much praise for his condemnation of the Scott report in early 1996, but more time ought to have been spent formulating an opinion. The speech seemed to be more linked to Cook's oratorical skills and finding fault with the government than with political skill.

Get used to the unthinkable as Slovaks step towards freedom
Article Abstract:
Slovakia voted the nationalist parties in at the Jun 1992 elections, increasing the probability of separating from Prague. Mr Vladimir Meciar, leader of the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, promised changes which might end the 70-year-old federation. The Slovak National Party may coalesce with Mr Meciar. Czechs and Slovaks have resided in one state since 1918 but their customs and languages are different. Slovakia was originally part of the Austro-Hungarian empire and has suffered under the economic changes.

Serb military surrenders to troop protest
Article Abstract:
Yugoslav Third Army Commander General Nebojsa Pavkovic has been forced to make a commitment to reservists that they will receive back pay. This follows protests in Vranje, Serbia. The reservists have doubts about whether Pavkovic's promise will be fulfilled, and there are likely to be protests by reservists in other towns. A disproportionate number of reservists called up to fight in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, were from southern Serbia.
