A friendship under strain
Article Abstract:
It is becoming widely recognized that the external examination system operated by UK universities is not effective. The system is not ensuring comparability between the degrees awarded by different universities, and external examiners sometimes become too bound up in the approach adopted by a particular university. In many cases, external examiners are required to work very hard for very little financial reward at a time of year when they are already very busy. It is believed that the report on higher education being compiled by Sir Ron Dearing will recommend a new approach to external examination.

Hard lessons in litigation
Article Abstract:
It has become increasingly common in the UK for students to take legal action against a university or college. This is prompting these institutions to consider how they can avoid becoming the subject of litigation. Most specifically, they are working to ensure that they can deliver everything they promise in their prospectuses. In some cases, students bring legal action simply because of a failure to teach, while in other cases they are aggrieved because of poor standards of teaching.
