A glimpse at the dark heart of Toryism
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party has tried to dismiss remarks made recently by Conservative MP David Evans which were insulting to blacks and to women. It claims that Evans is in fact very popular, and that his remarks should simply be seen as a joke. However, if a Labour MP were to make even one remark of that kind, the Conservative party would react extremely quickly, deriving as much political advantage as possible. It is likely that Evans' views are in fact very close to those of many Conservatives.

Why do they hate her so much?
Article Abstract:
Conservative MP Emma Nicholson has attracted widespread criticism for her decision to defect to the Liberal Democrats. She held a relatively unimportant position within the Conservative party, and the abuse which has been directed at her seems to be out of proportion with the significance of her decision. The fact that she is a woman seems to have influenced reactions to her move, as male MPs who have defected have not been so fiercely criticised.

So farewell then, John Major, man of shadows
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister John Major is unlikely to be remembered for any significant achievements. If, as seems very likely, the Conservative party loses the general election on May 1, 1997, Major will have held power for six years. During that time, his performance was no better than mediocre, and he showed a serious lack of vision. He was able to remain in power only because he had the ability to exploit a deep rift within the Conservative party.
