Better than the rest: Do Tory claims stand up?
Article Abstract:
There is a growing view among investors and financial analysts that the Anglo-Saxon economies, especially those of the US and the UK, are in a strong position to meet the economic challenges of the early years of the 21st century. This view is being highlighted by the UK Conservative party in its campaigning in the run-up to the forthcoming general election. However, it is important to note that inflation is still not particularly low in the UK, and that the performance of the UK and the US in the current economic cycle has not been better than that of Japan or continental Europe.

Will the European malaise drag Britain down?
Article Abstract:
The UK economy is reasonably strong, with clear signs of a revival in consumer activity. However, problems could still be created by a collapse of the UK's export markets. The German economy in particular is suffering problems, and there are indications that Europe as a whole is facing a recession. If efforts are made in continental Europe to bring about a cyclical upturn, the UK will be among the first countries to benefit.
