Article Abstract:
The film 'Washington Square' is a very bitter story dealing with self-discovery, according to Polish director Agnieszka Holland. However, the Hollywood studio executives who supported the film interpreted it more as a romantic costume drama. She feels that the work of Henry James, on which the film is based, is very relevant to society in the late 1990s. She is now considering an adaptation of a novel by contemporary writer Russell Banks.
