A housing estate on the way to Auschwitz
Article Abstract:
The Paris suburb of Drancy is currently home to many poor, most immigrant families, but during the second world war it was used as a transit camp for Jews being deported to Auschwitz. The Jews lived in squalid conditions there, but the situation was allowed to develop with the cooperation of the French authorities. This was because the Jews gave France a valuable bargaining tool in its sensitive relations with the occupying German forces. Jews who lived through this terrible experience were particularly shocked that local residents and businesses did not protest about what was happening.

Allies had firm evidence of Auschwitz gas chambers 'as early as 1942.'
Article Abstract:
Evidence of the existence of gas chambers at the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex was presented at a meeting between Jewish leaders and President Franklin Roosevelt in Dec 1942, according to new evidence from Foreign Office archives. It had previously been thought that the existence of the gas chambers remained a secret until a report compiled by two escapees became available in Jun 1944. The discovery of this material raises questions about why the UK and US governments did not take action to stop Hitler proceeding towards his Final Solution, the extermination of all Jews in Europe.

'Theatre begins at the gates of Auschwitz and if you don't know what I'm talking about, then I'm wasting my time.' (dramatist Edward Bond)
Article Abstract:
British theatre is in a very poor state, according to dramatist Edward Bond. He believes that the National Theatre and the RSC are being badly mismanaged, and feels that his work is ahead of what can be delivered by mainstream theatre in the UK. For this reason, he has not written a new work for the Royal Court Theatre since the early 1980s. He is very keen for those involved in the theatre to shake off the constraints on their working life. His latest work, 'Coffee,' is to be staged shortly by the Royal Court Theatre.
