He marched them up to the top of the hill and he marched them down again
Article Abstract:
A television programme made in 1983 which profiled Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams was extremely critical of him, accusing him of planning and organising terrorism. However, his public image has undergone a considerable transformation since that time, and he is now careful to appear patient and reasonable, disowning crimes against innocent civilians and not using any personal abuse against his critics. He has skillfully manipulated the IRA, persuading it that his new 'unarmed strategy' will bring positive results.

The ever-elusive nature of Gerry Adams
Article Abstract:
Many people have strong views about Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams. Those who hold the strongest views have without exception never visited Northern Ireland or the Irish Republic, yet they refuse to really listen to what he is saying or to listen to the opinions of others about him. In many cases, they have obtained their views simply from the media, and have not undertaken any research of their own into what he is really like. It is not possible to get really close to Adams, as he is extremely well protected.

The hard man talking soft
Article Abstract:
Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness was regarded during his early involvement with the republican movement as being more suited to taking action than to being a leader. However, he has changed considerably, and now shows talent and personality. He has a humorous side to his character, and comes across as very personable. He is self-assured, contrasting with Gerry Adams, who is more preoccupied. He is due to be named Sinn Fein's senior minister in the new Stormont Assembly.
