Telling porkies
Article Abstract:
It is important not to place an overtly political interpretation on works of art, according to Chinese artist Xu Bing. He is widely regarded as having led the revolutionary 'New Wave' movement in Peking, China, in the 1980s, and his installation piece 'A Book from the Sky' caused particular controversy. He admits that this work was cultural heresy, but regards himself as a patriot and traditionalist. He now lives and works in the US, and his work has become less aesthetic and more theoretical.

'I take upon myself the passion and the hysteria of the sacrifice so that you are spared.' (Hermann Nitsch, ICA, London, England)
Article Abstract:
The ICA gallery in London, England, is currently exhibiting the work of Austrian artist Hermann Nitsch. He has for many years attracted considerable controversy because of the inflammatory content of his work, which includes mutilated genitalia and aborted foetuses. He is regarded by some observers as being very cruel to animals, but he protests that he in fact loves animals. He believes that he creates a feast of life, and regards the artist as a priest.

The battle to save Bohemia has begun - in an East End warehouse
Article Abstract:
The Shoreditch area of London, England, began attracting artists, designers, writers and recluses in the late 1980s because it offered cheap living and working space. It is now becoming increasingly fashionable, and is attracting attention from property developers. Rents are rising dramatically, and artists no longer have access to inexpensive accommodation. Almost none of the original artists now live in the area.
