A little hypocrisy is good for us all
Article Abstract:
The recent scandal surrounding David Willetts, who is alleged to have attempted to subvert a committee responsible for overseeing MPs' behaviour when he was whip, has attracted considerable controversy. However, this overlooks the fact that incentives and rewards of various kinds have always existed in the UK political system. Indeed, some observers feel that a ruling party would not be able to enact much legislation at all if this were not the case. It could be argued that Willetts was actually acting as a guardian of the real constitution, based on ministerial power.

When MPs start taking the biscuits
Article Abstract:
There has always been a general reluctance to believe that corruption could take place in British politics. However, the case of Conservative MP Neil Hamilton, who has recently had to drop libel action against the Guardian newspaper, indicate that it is quite possible for MPs to become associated with corrupt practices. Claims that he accepted money for asking parliamentary questions are causing considerable embarrassment to the Conservative party at a time when it was just beginning to move towards the Labour party in the opinion polls.

Remembering the meaning of disgrace
Article Abstract:
The UK House of Commons has begun over recent years to take action against politicians found to have been involved in unethical practices. This reflects changing approaches to political disgrace, with the politician concerned no longer simply being excluded. It is now necessary to introduce harsh formal penalties, as if this does not happen the House of Commons will find that it loses its status in British society.
