A plea for 25,000 plants on Death Row
Article Abstract:
National Botanic Gardens conserve local plants which risk extinction. Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, conserves medicinal plants. Kingstown, St Vincent, the West Indies, propagates the island's 15 citrus fruit. The Bok Tower Gardens in Florida, US, has saved the Conradina glabra. The Botanic Garden Conservation Secretariat (BCGS) was established in 1988 to create an international network to protect endangered plants. There are about 1,700 species of plant in Britain, 11,000 in Europe and 25,000 in the world.

Wollerton revisited
Article Abstract:
Lesley Jenkins now feels confident enough to make a fresh start in the garden at Wollerton Old Hall in Shropshire, England. She lived in the house as a child, and as an adult was able to buy the property. She initially designed the garden quite formally, but also incorporated a less formal area of shrubs and trees. She now feels that the garden was becoming too designed, and is introducing a simpler, subtler design, with planting in cream and soft yellows.

Is it really necessary to destroy this garden?
Article Abstract:
The 14 acres of garden and surrounding pasture and woodland at Downe Hall in Bridport, Dorset, England, remain almost exactly as they were when they were first established in the late 18th century. There are some splendid trees, and yew, box and laurel protect a perimeter walk. However, the garden is now under threat from plans to build eight executive-style homes. Downe Hall itself would also be redeveloped, being converted into five flats.
