A plot, a spade and a proud pair of hands
Article Abstract:
The National Allotments Society estimates that 48,000 acres are cultivated but this area is not increasing despite the popularity of growing nutritious foods. Recycling has always been practiced on allotments. Many councils would like to use allotment sites for building but they are protected by the Smallholdings and Allotments Act of 1908 and the secretary of state for the environment has to approve any loss of sites. The Ponders End Allotment Society in northeast London has a clubhouse and committee enabling negotiations with the council to proceed successfully.

The thin end of the hedge
Article Abstract:
A long, narrow border suits bold, unelaborate plants. Hart's-tongue ferns are evergreen and attractive. Pyracantha can easily be trained over a wall to create a chequerboard effect. Alternate cones and balls of box and fill in the gaps with yellow aconite for colour. Plant English iris which flower in July. Combine them with sweet woodruff which grows 6 inches high and has tiny white flowers in May and June. White cyclamen will flower at the end of the season.

The joys of parenting
Article Abstract:
There are a number of different ways of propagating all plants except annuals, which can only be propagated by sowing seed. With other plants, it is possible to sow seed, take cuttings, divide them up or make layers. The method chosen will be determined by the end result required. Taking cuttings will ensure that the new young plant is identical to its parent, while sowing seed may give a variation on the parent.
