Maverick rides to the rescue of industry
Article Abstract:
Michael Heseltine has a reputation as a maverick, but he is a pragmatic interventionist. He established five urban projects in Liverpool and attempted to assemble a European consortium to buy Westland. He may decide that the Department of Trade and Industry should be more involved in industry than previously. His book 'The Challenge of Europe: Can Britain Win?' contains ideas such as the government helping private industry research and development with cash and specific tactics such as the European Community establishing a model European Company. He believes in the Department of Trade and Industry combining the role of the CBI and the chambers of commerce to act as a lobby group and supply business advice.

Apple starts to rot
Article Abstract:
Apple, which is regarded by some as the founder of the personal computer industry, could find it difficult to survive as a computer manufacturer. Loyal users of the Apple Macintosh point out that it uses technology which has only recently been adopted by Microsoft, but this will not serve to secure the company's future. Ironically, its most recent problems have resulted from high demand, with an order backlog of $1 billion in summer 1995.
