A serpent in our cool garden Eden
Article Abstract:
Ordinary voters in the UK have become increasingly aware of environmental issues. However, politicians have found it very hard to turn the environment into an issue on which they can have effective and distinctive policies. Action has been taken to deal with the most pressing environmental problems, and politicians are aware that voters are not prepared to accept environmental policies which would mean them making significant personal sacrifices. A further problem is that environmental improvements would probably have a disproportionately large impact on the poor.

The joys of a sound Constitution
Article Abstract:
The British Constitution does not exist in the form of a single document, and is more a series of understandings and arrangements. It has very little to do with politics, and has to be able to exist in its own right. There is currently strong pressure for the reform of the British Constitution, with many people believing that it ought to reflect modern political style. However, there is no evidence that a more formal, more explicit constitution would in fact bring any real advantages.

An ill wind blows some good
Article Abstract:
The Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion in 1986 focused the world's attention on nuclear safety standards in eastern Europe, and since then efforts have been made to improve these standards. In Bulgaria, for example, safety is now put before ensuring continuous power supplies, and more money is now being invested in maintaining nuclear facilities. Safety work is now based on a programme established by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (Wano).
