Old despots persist under new masters
Article Abstract:
Arabs are angry about the lack of leadership in Middle Eastern countries and taped sermons in Saudi Arabia criticise President Saddam and President Assad for accepting instructions from President Bush. Religious fundamentalism is functioning as an opposition movement. Events in Algeria showed that Islamic democracy does not further the interests of the West. Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt still purchase arms. Europe and the US are unlikely to encourage real democracy when dictators act according to their wishes.

Religion in the Middle East: the fundamental problem
Article Abstract:
It is possible to view the massacre of innocent people in the Middle East as resulting from religion itself, rather than the result of religion being used as a tool for a political purpose. It is very difficult for people observing the situation in the Middle East to accept that Christianity, Judaism and Islam should be held accountable to a certain extent for the acts of terror perpetrated in their name. It seems that extremists are an inevitable part of religion in the Middle East.

Henry Tanner
Article Abstract:
Journalist Henry Tanner studied at universities in France, Italy, the US and Switzerland, but failed to complete a degree. He emigrated from Switzerland to the US in the late 1940s, and sought employment with the New York Times. His application was turned down, but he was eventually taken on by this newspaper in the mid-1950s and worked there for 30 years. He became particularly well known for his reporting of war.
