A strange new thought for British cities: Pacino plays Jeffrey Archer
Article Abstract:
Some observers are expressing reservations about the prospect of London, England, having an elected mayor. They feel that serious tensions will arise between the mayor and the London boroughs, which will still be responsible for day-to-day administrative work, and also predict conflict between the mayor and the new assembly planned for London. Creating a mayor and an assembly for London will place some large responsibilities on agencies other than the government. The outcome of this move is not completely predictable.

Why Norman's feeling bullish again
Article Abstract:
Former UK Chancellor Norman Lamont has proved popular since he was elected MP for Harrogate, England, in 1996. He is currently campaigning intensively in the area in the run-up to the forthcoming general election. He has become very concerned about local issues, and has been determined that his electioneering will not be hampered by attention from the national media. He believes that the UK's relationship with the European Union should be the key issue in the election campaign.

Lawyers, watch out - court fees are just the beginning
Article Abstract:
It seems that new UK Lord Chancellor Lord Irvine will not support the views of lawyers as extensively as they had anticipated. He has responded to complaints from lawyers about a rise in court fees, for example, by stating that lawyers should look at the fees they charge their clients, implying that they should reduce their fees if they are so concerned about the poor. Irvine's radical line is likely to be seen in many other areas of judicial administration.
