Stakeholding gone mad, or is this the future?
Article Abstract:
Communitarian capitalism, in which companies operate for the wider interests of the community and the country, rather than for the benefit of their shareholders, has long been popular in Japan. However, the economic crisis in Asia seems to have cast a shadow on communitarian capitalism. Despite this, it is possible that this approach to business will prevail again in the future. It is certainly difficult to believe that approach to business that prevails in the western world at present, with corporate profits taking a rising share of overall wealth, will be tolerated indefinitely.

The problem with British inefficiency
Article Abstract:
UK Chancellor Gordon Brown will face significant challenges as he seeks to establish a fully competitive business environment. It will be necessary to focus on deregulation, ensuring that the government does not intervene in such a way as to hamper business growth. Subjecting businesses to social and environmental obligations will make them less productive. Indeed, a report from McKinsey and Co indicates that overregulation has been a key cause of the UK's poor productivity.
