A summit to help Major
Article Abstract:
The European Community summit in Birmingham on Oct 16, 1992 was held to support the British government in ratifying the Treaty on European Union. Germany and other countries have published helpful press reports. The exchange rate mechanism (ERM) was not under discussion. Each state was allotted ten minutes to discuss the criteria for subsidiarity and democracy. It is expected to be years before a decision is reached. Other issues on the agenda were winter aid for Yugoslav refugees and world trade.

Toying with the Maastricht puzzle
Article Abstract:
The European Community Edinburgh summit must work out a way to convince the Danes that the Maastricht treaty is suitable for them to accept, with openness and subsidiarity. The EC budget and enlargement must also be settled. The British government described the summit's task as a Rubik's Cube because of the intricacy required. Interdependent economies make states tense about their interests so they trade and compromise.
