A time there was ...
Article Abstract:
It has emerged gradually since the death of composer Benjamin Britten that he wrote much more music than was generally acknowledged. There were many early pieces, some of which were simply abandoned. Britten returned to some of his early works, but had mixed views about their quality. In some cases, he left friends and colleagues to revive these pieces. The annual Aldeburgh Festival has often featured a Britten premiere, and the 1997 festival will include his Double Concerto for violin and viola, which dates from 1932.

An instrument for Messiaenic devotion
Article Abstract:
The composer Olivier Messiaen wanted to escape technically and spiritually from the idea of limitations, according to organist Gillian Weir, who is often closely associated with Messiaen's music. She is to perform in Westminster Cathedral, London, England, at a concert entitled 'The Celestial Banquet' marking the 90th anniversary of Messiaen's birth. She is very concerned about the mechanistic approach seen among many younger performers, which she regards as going against music's natural spontaneity.

Marathon man
Article Abstract:
Organist Peter Hurford is very keen to encourage more people to listen to the music of JS Bach. This is why he has agreed to give a series of 15 concerts as part of the 1997 Edinburgh Festival. These concerts will cover almost all the organ music ever written by Bach. He has almost completely devoted his career to the music of Bach, being particularly attracted to the music's harmonic inventiveness. He believes that the Chorale Preludes are the key to the very essence of Bach's music.
