A victory for the thin-skinned

Article Abstract:

The decision to ban the showing of a 'Panorama' interview with prime minister John Major in Scotland was not really significant as an example of public censorship. In fact, the interview showed the prime minister in such a poor light that it would not have given the Conservative party an unfair advantage in the run-up to local elections in Scotland, as opposition parties had claimed when they sought the ban. It is time to move away from this sort of petty argument and to focus instead on producing more quality political debate.

Many people in the UK are no longer able to distinguish right from wrong, according to George Carey, Archbishop of Canterbury. UK society is danger of becoming shallow, based on consumerism. There are no longer any shared values, and almost any kind of attitude is regarded as acceptable. He has now decided to launch a national debate on the moral decline of the UK, bringing together the government, schools, parents and the media.

A real life or death decision

Article Abstract:

The UK government must shortly make extremely difficult decisions about the future of its involvement in the war in former Yugoslavia. It must now send more troops to the region, showing full commitment to a lengthy struggle, or withdraw completely, leaving Bosnia to a terrible fate. The main decision MPs must make is whether they are prepared to place the lives of more British troops at risk.
