The latest Comme des Garcons menswear collection, designed by Rei Kawakubo, has offended some people because some items were reminiscent of uniforms worn in Nazi death camps during the second world war. The pyjama stripes have now been withdrawn, and an apology has been made. Similar incidents seem to happen every season in the fashion world, with many designers offering collections which border on the distasteful. It is often thought very unfashionable to express dislike for a designer label which is currently very popular, but in some cases the clothes are in fact not at all attractive.

It is very common for fashion designers, both male and female, to have a very close relationship with their mother. This is particularly the case with Isaac Mizrahi, who seems to design clothes which reflect how his mother would have dressed when she was younger. There is a strong trend towards 'grown-up' clothes, and fashion design is no longer dominated by the cult of youth. Mizrahi's designs are the most interesting on the New York fashion scene at present.

The 50s: a decade when women wore pink meringues

Many fashion designers are currently reviving ideas which were first seen in the 1950s. Original 1950s clothes can sometimes be found in second-hand shops, and are suitable for both younger and older women. If second-hand clothes are not available, then plenty of new clothes from top designers have the same elegance and impact. These styles are also starting to be seen in films, particularly 'Heavenly Creatures, ' which is actually set in the 1950s.
