Iraq casts long shadow over Kuwaitis
Article Abstract:
Kuwait is still very wary about Iraq, even though five years have now passed since the end of the Gulf war. It has the reassurance of security pacts with the US, Russia and France, but the threat of war still pervades every part of ordinary life. The country has become less cosmopolitan, with guest workers having left, and it is unwilling to accept any friendly overtures from Iraq. There is particular concern about the future of oil prices in this unsettled climate.

Taking on the professionals
Article Abstract:
Powerful professional groups such as doctors and lawyers have clashed strongly with the government over recent years, resenting any government intervention in their activities. The government realises that these groups are very important, and has at times tried to appease them, but they could still eventually take on the role which trade unions used to hold. All political parties must now develop an effective strategy for dealing with these powerful interest groups.
