Garden of the medieval manuscript
Article Abstract:
Work is currently being undertaken to recreate the garden at Kelmscott Manor, returning it to the way it looked in the time of William Morris, who rented the house as a summer retreat in the period 1871-1896. This has included the replanting of standard roses and of a spotty laurel. There are signs that some of the insensitive planting of recent years is now being removed, but there is still much progress to be made before the garden can be said to be in a state which Morris would recognise.

That Norah Barlow is having a good time
Article Abstract:
Some gardeners take great interest in seeing which flowers result from the cross-breeding of plants such as aquilegias, while others are unwilling to allow plants to drift away from their true form. Some plants, including foxgloves, tend to revert to their wild form if allowed to cross-breed, and the garden therefore loses fancy varieties. If allowed to, plants can turn up in the most unexpected places in the garden, far away from their original location.

It was nice weather for duckweed
Article Abstract:
One of the most interesting exhibits at the 1995 Chelsea Flower Show as the topiary in the Honda Tea Garden made from a Japanese holly, 'Ilex crenata.' This holly has very small leaves and smooth grey bark. The Tea Garden won a gold medal, as did the garden designed by Rupert Golby for 'Country Living' magazine. This garden was on a large plot divided into four by paths made from brick and quarry tiles. It included vegetables and a wide range of flowers.
