Accountants harden up the value of company 'soft' stuff
Article Abstract:
There can be considerable challenges associated with valuing businesses, especially in the case of businesses which have few fixed assets. There is now growing pressure for financial reporting to fill the gap between the net assets of a business and the value of a business as a whole. The Institute of Chartered Accountants' financial reporting committee has recommended a 'twin-track' approach. Within this structure, all users, instead of just sophisticated investors, have the chance to assess whether managers are meeting their commitments, while analysts remain free to undertake their own calculations about a company's underlying financial performance.
