Across Europe with a lorryload of jumble
Article Abstract:
British volunteer groups regularly travel in convoys to Romania carrying relief supplies. They are not habitual charity workers and some are seeking children for adoption. One group from an English public house in Hampshire were accompanied by a BBC Radio crew. Events did not go as planned. The locals were not all appreciative of what the volunteers were doing and they in turn did not feel they had come sufficiently prepared. One volunteer brought adoption papers with him in case he found a suitable child. The group is arranging to visit again.

Doing good is doing well
Article Abstract:
In the later 19th century Britain's social welfare was mainly organised by voluntary associations. Charitable foundations ran schools and hospitals and many professional, cultural, sporting and other organisations flourished. Post-war state schooling and the National Health Service took over these services, obliterating the voluntary societies, but 'father of the welfare state' William Beveridge recognised the continuing need for them in his book 'Voluntary Action.'

Rural rescue
Article Abstract:
The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers undertakes a great deal of conservation work in the UK. Volunteers pay a small amount to join a conservation scheme, and stay in basic accommodation. They become involved in a wide range of tasks, including dry-stone walling, coppicing and tree-planting. They work extremely hard, but also enjoy the friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The organization finds that volunteers can often be more effective than paid workers.
