Professor Eric Laithwaite
Article Abstract:
Engineer Eric Laithwaite joined the Royal Air Force in 1941 and from 1943 worked at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. It was probably at this time that he gained the strong interest in gyroscopes that remained with him for the rest of his life. He read Electrical Engineering at Manchester University, England, from 1946, and in 1950 joined the staff as Assistant Lecturer. He was particularly influential for his work on linear induction machines.

Engineer and university administrator Archibald Black was born in Glenormiston, Australia, in 1912. He studied Mathematics and Applied Mechanics at Trinity College, Cambridge, England, and became lecturer and demonstrator in Engineering Science at Oxford, England, in 1935.

Frank Newby

Engineer Frank Newby was born in Barnsley, England, in 1926. He studied Engineering at Trinity College, Cambridge, England, and joined Felix Samuely in 1949, assuming leadership of the practice in 1959.
