Across the hills and into the future
Article Abstract:
The Community University of North Wales links the University of Wales, Bangor, and the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education at Wrexham with eight other further education institutions. These institutions will work together to boost participation in further education and to encourage life-long learning. The venture will develop progression routes from further to higher education, use new technology to overcome geographical isolation and boost the availability of Welsh-medium and bilingual courses.

The British degree goes on sale
Article Abstract:
Consumers have become more important in the United Kingdom higher education system. Marketing and advertising have become increasingly important and this is especially true at the time of Clearing, when would-be students who have yet to find a place are matched with universities. There are likely to be fewer students in 1998 as more will seek to enter in 1997 to avoid paying fees. Universities also place priority in encouraging school leavers and others to make initial applications to them.

In class, bigger is very rarely better
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly clear that the performance of students at UK universities is closely connected with class size. Student performance tends to decline as class size grows. This is because large class sizes make it hard for lecturers to give students individual attention. Furthermore, the proportion of weaker students rises as class size increases. Some students in large classes lack motivation, especially if they have been accustomed to studying in small groups at school.
