When you need a friend
Article Abstract:
Students with problems at United Kingdom universities can seek help from a range of sources. There are personal tutors who can provide advice on academic issues and may help with other matters. Specialist services are provided by financial counselors, the careers service, the university medical service, and study skills tutors. Counsellors can provide confidential advice on all issues. Students may not find all the services available so they can also use services not geared specifically to students such as Samaritans.

Polytechnics step into the future
Article Abstract:
Polytechnics were intended to provide comprehensive higher education in cities yet the option to acquire university status is popular as it will increase their funding. In 1992 nearly one in five poly students is non-white. Polytechnics are aware of job options for their students and gear their courses accordingly. They recruit part-time, mature students and those in their twenties who have worked after leaving school. Intake is increasing and over 90% of students complete their courses.
