Action at last to save Britain's threatened hedgerows
Article Abstract:
UK Environment Minister Michael Meacher has promised that a new set of draft regulations on the protection of hedgerows will be drawn up. This follows a recommendation from a group of experts that the 1997 Hedgerow Regulations should be made simpler and stronger. The UK had an estimated 620,000 miles of hedges in 1955, but by 1993 this had declined to an estimated 236,000 miles. Ian Prior has become the first landowner in the UK to be prosecuted under the new regulations for removing hedgerows.
