After the deluge
Article Abstract:
The next large-scale eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Italy will cause widespread devastation. The eruption will sweep away villages of illegally-built houses on the slopes of the mountains, and chaos will arise as the residents of these villages seek to escape towards the coastal plain. This is because their only escape route will be along the four-lane motorway from Naples, Italy, to Salerno, Italy, which is always extremely busy and has limited access. Recent mudslides in the region have already given an indication of the potential scale of the disaster.

Italy's Olive Tree fails to bear fruit
Article Abstract:
The Olive Tree centre-left coalition which has been in power in Italy since Apr 1996 has failed to fulfill its promise to undertake radical change in the country. The political system is still dominated by extreme difficulties in pushing through any legislation and by the domination by scheming party leaders of government ministers. The government is not particularly unpopular, but there is no sense of a new political future in Italy.
