Passion among the plum trees

There are over 80 different varieties of plums. Climate and situation is important. Plum trees like hot summers, hard winters and short springs. They need protection from wind and late frosts. Fan-trained trees produce the most succulent fruit and should be planted against south-facing walls. The Victoria variety is the easiest plum to cultivate but has a tendency to overcrop. The infection of trees by silverleaf is incurable.

Purple sprouting broccoli can be grown very successfully as long as it is protected with netting from attack by birds such as pigeons. Other brassicas which are worth growing include broccoli, which is generally more successful than cauliflower, and calabrese. The most common method of planting bassicas is to sow see thinly in drills from Mar onwards and then to move the seedlings to their permanent positions in early summer.
