After the peace deal, what is it to be Irish?
Article Abstract:
Irish people living in England have generally felt that to acknowledge their Irish heritage too openly would be a negative step. Indeed, many have tried to disassociate themselves from Ireland. However, this situation may change as a result of the peace agreement in Northern Ireland. The longer the agreement lasts, the less Irish people living in England will feel that they have to apologize for the conflict they left behind. The agreement appears to acknowledge that the Irish are not only those who live within the geographical borders of Ireland.

Will they ever get round that table?
Article Abstract:
The ceasefire in Northern Ireland is still holding, and some developments are taking place as a result of this, including the release of republican and loyalist prisoners. However, there is little progress towards a political settlement, and this could damage prospects for a lasting peace in Northern Ireland. There are no signs that all-party talks are going to take place in the near future, with the IRA and the UK government clashing over the issue of the surrender of arms.

A rather angry peacemaker
Article Abstract:
John Hume has been a very strong figure in the conflict in Northern Ireland over recent decades, and is regarded by some as the most imaginative constitutional nationalist in Irish history. He is a visionary, believing that peaceful nationalism can have a positive role to play, and continues to strive to promote a peaceful approach as the best route to stability. However, he has not been able to gain sufficient support from Protestants.
